"Adopt-A-School is very close to my heart because it is so much more than an afternoon science lesson with a fourth-grade classroom. It’s really a relationship thing where you go in, and you really get to know these children as individuals. You look forward to seeing them as much as they look forward to seeing you, and at the end of the year, no one’s really ready to go home! For me, it’s really encouraging to get to be a part of uplifting these children and, in some small way, helping them believe in their own value and potential as individuals."

-Christina Garber '26

"Adopt-A-School was one of the most meaningful activities I participated in this year. Bringing lessons to kids who wouldn't otherwise be learning science yet is challenging, yet so rewarding. We are able to build relationships with these girls and boys that last the whole semester, and our excitement for learning catches on in their classroom! Traveling to School 19 is something I look forward to every week; I think we're as excited to visit the kids as they are to have us come in!"

Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies

The Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at Roberts Wesleyan University is excited to offer you a unique opportunity through our partnership with the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies.

AS a Roberts student, you can take classes, learn hands-on skills and techniques, gain field experience, conduct research, develop tools for environmental stewardship, and experience science education from a Christian perspective while earning Roberts credit.

Au Sable offers more than twenty field-based courses ranging from Marine Mammals to Tropical Agriculture and Missions to Restoration Ecology in four different locations around the globe:

  • Great Lakes Region (Mancelona, MI)
  • Pacific Northwest (Whidbey Island, WA)
  • South India (Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu)
  • Latin America (Vara Blanca, Costa Rica).

If you’re passionate about environmental stewardship, you can even earn a certificate by taking multiple courses, such as a water resource analyst.

You can also participate in the Au Sable Undergraduate Research Program, which tackles pressing questions in ecology, conservation, and restoration. This program allows you to work with local environmental agencies and organizations, providing informed data and gaining hands-on experience in both laboratory and field research.

"Learning more about God's creation is incredible, and this environment is the perfect place for fellowship and exploration." -Sarah Clay
