A student who needs a prescription but is unable to afford it may request a short-term loan from the Student Success Initiative coordinated by Tabitha Arrendell in the Rinker Community Service Center.
Allergies and Medical Reactions
Students with known medical conditions (such as diabetes or a history of seizures) or allergies may find it a good practice to alert a close friend or Residence Hall staff member as a precautionary measure. This is particularly important for any off-campus activities in which a student may participate.
Class Passes for Illness/Injury
The Wellness Center's excuse policy is consistent with the recommendations from the American College Health Association to encourage the appropriate use of health care services, maintain confidentiality, and support communication between professor and student.
Students are responsible for adhering to the faculty member's absence policy. It is the purview of the faculty to ascertain when or if a student will be excused from class.
The Wellness Center will only provide a medical notification if the situation meets all the following conditions:
- Illness or condition is measured medically significant by the Wellness Center provider before the class or exam was missed
- A student’s personal physician may at any time issue an excused absence, claiming extra precautions and restrictions. This must be in the form of written instruction and provided to the Wellness Center for verification.
- If a student is absent for 3 or more days, the Wellness Center will notify Student Life of the student’s legitimate absence to inform the faculty. Written documentation from an external medical provider must be provided to the Wellness Center.
The Wellness Center does not provide excuse notes for students who miss class due to illness or injury.
- Minor illnesses that do not prevent a student from going to class.
- Musculoskeletal conditions (such as minor ankle injuries, wrist sprains, etc.)
- Requesting an excused note for verifications of illness after the illness is over or after missing a class or exam.
- A class or an exam missed for an appointment at the Wellness Center
